NEW RYOBI 29-INCH, 5-COLOR PRESS WITH COATER DELIVERS BIG BOOST IN PRINT QUALITY, PRODUCTIVITY FOR BUSY MARYLAND PRINTER Veteran graphics industry executive seeks to help U.S. commercial printers boost productivity, profits by leveraging strengths of Ryobi and xpedx LANDOVER, Maryland, December 12, 2007—Doyle Printing & Offset Co. Inc., a mid-size sheetfed commercial printer serving clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic states, has installed a new 23x29 inch RYOBI 755 five-color press with aqueous coater. The xpedx Hanover, Maryland Division won the press order following Doyle’s extensive review of equipment and service offerings from top global press manufacturers. xpedx Printing Technologies is the exclusive distributor of Ryobi-branded presses in the U.S. Landover, MD—based Doyle Printing is seeing strong growth from clients including area companies, national associations and unions. In ordering the new Ryobi press, Doyle officials said they needed to offer customers new state-of-the-art print quality and increase production efficiencies. "We looked at 40-inch and 29-inch formats, five- or six-color from the top European and Japanese press manufacturers and eventually selected the 23x29-inch RYOBI 755XLP with aqueous coater," explains company controller Anthony Piccirilli. Doyle Printing also has two 40-inch presses, two 20-inch presses, three Ryobi portrait presses, two letterpresses and a duplicator. Doyle operations manager Dave King said the new Ryobi press is dramatically shortening makereadies and drying times—two major opportunities to improve pressroom efficiency and productivity. As demand has increased for more short-run four-color printing, the Ryobi press fits the sweet spot between the company's Ryobi portrait presses and its 6-color, 40-inch press. Plate hanging is very quick and makeready is also dramatically decreased—the "first pull" looks good in as little as 20 sheets. Press speeds of up to 15,000 sph are "faster than anything we've ever had." The press can also accommodate longer runs—the company can now produce jobs as big as 150,000 impressions or higher with ease. Also important are the big decreases in drying time, particularly for jobs that require heavy ink coverage. "With the extended delivery and aqueous coating, we’re getting a major improvement in drying time and great solids color coverage," King said. Greatly reduced dry times on coated and uncoated paper means increased throughput. "We can now get it off press, sealed and to the cutter on average in about half an hour, and with zero marking," explained King. "That's a big difference from not being able to have a job ready until late in the day or the next day." Piccirilli and King said service was also a top consideration. Service levels from press manufacturers can vary widely, but xpedx Printing Technologies provides quick and personalized technical support on Ryobi presses, on-site when needed. Doyle Printing also has a longstanding relationship with xpedx, a major North American supplier of printing papers and graphic supplies and equipment for commercial and in-plant printers.
